The shape of the list
Independent buyout and growth investors with a genuine Tokyo deal team - lower-mid-market funds, succession specialists and the dual PE and venture vehicles the market favours.
The large domestic funds, the global giants' Tokyo offices, and bank- and insurer-captive vehicles are excluded - their recruiting and their deals are a different world.
Full detail on sourcing and verification is on the methodology page.
Common questions
Why does this page list so few firms?
Because that is the real number: 15 independent boutique PE firms verifiably investing from Tokyo. Japanese PE concentrates in a few large funds, and FirmScope counts what exists rather than padding the list.
How do juniors break into Tokyo private equity?
Almost always sideways: a few years in M&A advisory, the big securities houses' deal teams or transaction services first, then a direct approach. Several firms here have never once posted an analyst role publicly.
What deals do Tokyo boutique PE firms actually do?
Succession buyouts of founder-owned companies above all - Japan's demographic wave - plus carve-outs from conglomerates and growth positions in the mid-market. Operational improvement carries the return.
