Consulting application timeline (UK)

The large strategy houses run autumn deadlines and structured case interviews. The boutique majority - specialist, sector and mid-market firms - hire in waves through the year and often skip the case-factory process entirely.

  1. September - November

Structured deadlines at the large firms

The well-known strategy firms typically close summer and graduate applications between late October and November. Case interview preparation needs to start well before the deadline, not after.

  2. November - February

    Interview rounds

First rounds and partner rounds run through winter. Offers for structured programmes mostly land by early spring.

  3. January - May

    Boutique hiring waves

Specialist and mid-market consultancies hire against project pipelines, with visible waves in the new year and late spring. Many list roles only on their own site - or nowhere at all.

  4. Year-round

    Direct approaches to specialists

A boutique that just won a large engagement needs people now. Firms with a clear sector focus respond to candidates who can speak that sector's language in the first paragraph.

What works

  • Start case practice 8-10 weeks before your first structured deadline.
  • For boutiques, lead with sector knowledge rather than consulting-speak.
  • A follow-up after five quiet days roughly doubles response rates on cold approaches.
