Asset management application timeline (UK)

Large asset managers run September-to-November graduate deadlines. The boutique majority - specialist funds, hedge funds, family offices - hire through the year, often via direct approaches and word of mouth.

  1. September - November

    Graduate scheme deadlines

The big houses close autumn applications for next year's intake, with online tests and assessment centres through late autumn. Insight events for earlier-year students cluster in the same window.

  2. October - December

    Interviews and offers

Structured programmes interview through late autumn; offers generally land before or just after the new year.

  3. January - June

    Boutique and fund hiring

Specialist managers and hedge funds hire against performance and inflows, not a calendar. The new year and post-bonus season (spring) see the most movement.

  4. Year-round

    Direct approaches

Smaller funds rarely advertise. A short email showing genuine interest in their strategy - long/short, credit, quant, real assets - reaches the person who decides.

What works

  • Reference the firm's actual strategy in the first line - generic "passion for markets" is deleted on sight.
  • A paper portfolio or investment write-up is the strongest artefact a student can attach.
  • Post-bonus season (March-May) is when boutique seats open - have your list ready before it.
